Fish Market on the Seashore . 1613

Oil on panel . 61 * 35.5 cm.

In the 17th century the seascape or marine painting was a purely Dutch genre. Among the earliest such works was Adam Willaerts's Fish Market on the Seashore. The artist depicted the harsh North Sea and flat shore being approached by a sailing vessel proudly flying the flag of the United Provinces. Soft pale blue and grey hues predominate in the painting.
