The Cimmerian Landscape . 1910

Oil on Canvas . 92 * 199 cm.

In his work as a whole Konstantin Bogayevsky created a historical image of the Crimea, or more precisely of the eastern part of it which was known from ancient times as Cimmeria. The Crimea was indeed the only theme in the artist's work before the October Revolution of 1917. On the basis of the real landscape Bogayevsky created fantastic images of a mute, primordial nature. His "Cimmerian Landscape" depicts an imaginary country, gloomy and uninhabited, where everything has frozen in inner concentration -- the masses of rock, sullen and immobile, the cold, heavy water and the dry, stifling air. No rich greenery, no flowers, no birds, no people. Everything is sleeping, yet seemingly waiting in alarm for something. Bogayevsky strove to create a romantically elevated, sublimely solemn image.
